Who came up with that name?! M109 is the furthest away spiral galaxy in the Messier catalogue. It is located roughly 87 million light years from earth. The estimated mass of the galaxy is around 250 billion star masses. This galaxy is one of the 4 sparred galaxies in the messier catalogue (barred means it has a bar like structure in the center).
