The moon as seen on 31st October 2017 at 85% of full moon. This view just barely fits into the telescopes field of view.
Apart from a lot of craters, the darker areas are called “Mare”, which is latin for “sea”. The early astronomers thought these were lakes or bodies of waters, hence the name. Also slightly visible are brownish / redish areas, which hint at the mineral composition (iron for example) on the surface.
